SunButter Salty and Sweet Cake Recipe

Sweet teeth and salty cravers alike will both adore this SunButter Salty & Sweet Cake, which looks fancy and decadent but is actually quite easy. It’s perfect served at a dinner party, family gathering or as a birthday cake. We topped ours with nut-free chocolate curls and pretzels for a festive display. Enjoy!

SunButter Salty and Sweet Cake



2 c. flour

2 c. sugar

1/4 c. cocoa

1/4 tsp. salt

1/2 c. buttermilk

2 eggs

1/2 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. vanilla

2/3 c. butter

1/2 c. SunButter

1 c. boiling water


2/3 c. butter, softened

1/8 c. SunButter

4 Tbsp. cocoa

6 Tbsp. milk

1 lb. powdered sugar


Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Stir together flour, sugar, cocoa and salt. In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk, eggs, baking soda, and vanilla. In a medium saucepan, melt butter. Stir in SunButter until smooth. Add boiling water, stir and remove from heat. Pour SunButter mixture into flour mixture and stir. Pour in buttermilk mixture and blend together. Pour batter into jelly roll pan. Bake for 20 minutes, then remove it from the oven. Meanwhile, combine icing ingredients. When cake is cool, cut into squares and stack into “mountain.” Drizzle icing over and top with nut-free chocolate curls, pretzels or nut-free candies to fit your occasion!
