Bird Seed Cake
Ingredients
A snack for our fine feathered friends!
Here's what you need:
- 1 c. lard
- 1/2 c. creamy SunButter
- 1/2 c. sun butter (it's like peanut butter but it's made with sunflower seeds instead of peanuts)
- 1 c. old-fashioned rolled oats
- 1 c. cornmeal
- 1 c. wheat germ
- 1 c. whole wheat flour
- 1 c. mixture of raisins and dried cranberries (diced up apple would be great, too!)
- 1 c. bird seed with unhulled sunflower seeds
Directions
Step 1:
In a microwave-safe glass bowl, melt the lard. (Monitor your lard because you don't won't to overheat it. I suggest 20 sec. increments at a time.) Remove from microwave and mix in the peanut and sun butters. (If needed, microwave again to maintain a gooey texture that's easy to work with.)
Step 2:
Begin mixing in all your dry ingredients (oats, cornmeal, wheat germ, whole wheat flour). Also mix in the bird seed and fruit.
Step 3:
Pour mixture in a freezer safe dish and let sit in freezer till completely hardened -- usually just a few hours.
Step 4:
Once the birdseed cake is frozen solid, flip the cake out on to a cutting board and slice it to fit the size of your suet cage.
Step 5:
Hang outside and enjoy the birds!
